Metascience Alliance launches at Metascience 2025 Conference

RoRI is proud to be a founding member of the newly launched Metascience Alliance

The Metascience Alliance officially launched this morning at the Metascience 2025 Conference in London – with the Research on Research Institute (RoRI) proud to be among its founding members.

As interest in metascience continues to grow globally, the Alliance represents a major step forward: a new cross-sector coalition and hub for alignment and collaboration across the field. It brings together researchers, funders, institutions, publishers, policymakers, infrastructure providers, entrepreneurs, and others working to strengthen how science is conducted, evaluated, and communicated.

Rather than acting as a central authority, the Metascience Alliance will support shared priorities, amplify existing work, and create space for collaborative reform and innovation. Over time, it will help coordinate joint efforts, reduce duplication, and accelerate collective progress through community-building, workforce development, and strategic matchmaking.

The Alliance is currently in a two-year pilot phase (2025–2026), catalyzed and operationally supported by the Center for Open Science (COS). During this formative period, it will work with partners to co-create its structure, priorities, and activities.

Together, we aim to:

  • Build community through convenings, networking events, and resources that support onboarding and connection across disciplines and sectors
  • Strengthen the workforce by supporting new career pathways, offering cross-sector training, and launching programs for postdocs and early-stage innovators
  • Enable matchmaking by connecting researchers, funders, infrastructure providers, and others to co-develop questions, design projects, and catalyze collaboration
  • Amplify and align efforts across the field to reduce duplication, surface shared goals, and encourage collective experimentation

James Wilsdon, Executive Director at the Research on Research Institute, said:

As we’ve seen from the 830 participants across 65 countries who joined us in London for Metascience 2025, the metascience community is expanding and evolving, and drawing in a dizzying array of actors and institutions from research, government, funders, technology, publishers and philanthropy.

We’re excited by the potential of the new Metascience Alliance to strengthen connections, cohesion and community-building. RoRI is proud to be one of the founding group of members, and we look forward to joining forces with others to build capacity and boost impacts through the Metascience Alliance.

Going forward, the Metascience Conference – which brought together a global and interdisciplinary community in London this week – will now become one of the flagship activities organised by the Alliance going forward.

RoRI is excited to help shape the future of the Metascience Alliance and contribute to a stronger, more connected metascience ecosystem worldwide.
