RoRI’s Impact: What we’ve achieved – and where we’re going

We’re pleased to launch RoRI’s Impact Report, a snapshot of everything we’ve achieved together with our partners over the past two years

The Research on Research Institute (RoRI) has published a new impact report that shares some of the ways RoRI has grown and developed over the past two and a half years – deepening our programme of work, expanding our reach, and influencing policy and practice across the global research landscape.

Founded in 2019, the Research on Research Institute is an international collaboration dedicated to transforming research systems and cultures. This report marks the midpoint of RoRI’s second phase (2023–2027), following a successful pilot phase and transition to a new home at UCL.

RoRI now works with over 30 public funders and foundations across 15 countries, collectively responsible for around US$30 billion in annual R&D investment.

With a growing team and active projects spanning topics like research assessment, narrative CVs, AI in funding, and transdisciplinary support, RoRI is helping shape the future of how research is governed and evaluated.

RoRI Co-Chairs Gert V. Balling, Katrin Milzow, Ludo Waltman and Executive Director James Wilsdon wrote:

In these turbulent times for global science, now is the moment to look ahead and reafirm our shared commitment to the urgent challenges before us.

RoRI is playing a growing role in shaping research policy and metascience priorities globally, contributing to forums, white papers, and funding initiatives across the globe.

In the past two years, we published 37 research outputs, delivered 104 talks in 19 countries, and organised 35 events for community building with research funders, metaresearchers, publishers and other stakeholders from around the world.

In 2025, although science and research are under intense pressure in certain countries, there is also a palpable sense of metascience moving up a gear. Powered by an expanding portfolio of methods, its ambition is to ensure that R&D budgets are invested wisely, and that funding is allocated, research conducted, results disseminated and outcomes measured in ways that are transparent, fair and informed by robust evidence of what works.
